چکیده

The RAPID array uses standard observational techniques — moored instruments that measure conductivity, temperature and pressure, as well as bottom pressure recorders — to measure density and pressure gradients across the North Atlantic, from which one can readily calculate the basin overturning circulation [1] and heat transport [2]. Although straightforward to implement, it is less obvious how to describe the observed low-frequency basin-wide signals in terms of specific dynamic processes. We approach this goal by decomposing full-depth observations in terms of vertical modes, which are then compared and contrasted with sea surface height (SSH) from altimetry. More specifically, we investigate how well SSH can be used to reconstruct 1) full water-column density perturbations, 2) geostrophic transport fluctuations between moorings, and 3) the basin-wide overturning signal.

Investigation of Geostrophic and Ekman Surface Current Using Satellite Altimetry Observations and Surface Wind in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea

The rise of satellite altimetry is a revolution in the ocean sciences. Due to its global coverage and its high resolution, altimetry classically outperforms in situ water level measurement. Ekman and geostrophic currents are large parts of the ocean’s current, playing a vital role in global climate variations. According to the classic oceanography, Ekman and geostrophic currents can be calculat...

Windowing Effects of Short Time Fourier Transform on Wideband Array Signal Processing Using Maximum Likelihood Estimation

During the last two decades, Maximum Likelihood estimation (ML) has been used to determine Direction Of Arrival (DOA) and signals propagated by the sources, using narrowband array signals. The algorithm fails in the case of wideband signals. As an attempt by the present study to overcome the problem, the array outputs are transformed into narrowband frequency bins, using short time Fourier tran...

Gravity acceleration at the sea surface derived from satellite altimetry data using harmonic splines

Gravity acceleration data have grand pursuit for marine applications. Due to environmental effects, marine gravity observations always hold a high noise level. In this paper, we propose an approach to produce marine gravity data using satellite altimetry, high-resolution geopotential models and harmonic splines. On the one hand, harmonic spline functions have great capability for local gravity ...

تخمین جهانی پتانسیل ژئوئید، توپوگرافی سطح دریا و ژئوئید بر اساس مشاهدات ارتفاع‌سنجی ماهواره‌ای

Using satellite altimetry derived mean sea level (MSL), geopotential coefficients in terms of ellipsoidal harmonics from recent satellite gravimetry missions, gravity potential values over a grid consisting of 33,486 points at global sea areas are computed and the mean value of the gravity potential at MSL is calculated as a new geoid’s potential value. In this way we have exactly followed the ...
